Spitfire MkVb (Vc none Trop) PP-H/BR498 flown by Wing Commander Peter Prosser Hanks, Officer Commanding Luqa Wing, Malta, October 1942.
Toward the Autumn of 1942 an increasing number of Spitfire Vcs were arriving on Malta with Tropical filters removed, aiding the performance against the German and Italian fighters.
In this aircraft Prosser Hanks claimed four destroyed, three damaged and two probable destroyed during Operation Blitz in Sept/Oct 1942.
Flt Lt Bill Rolls also claimed five destroyed enemy aircraft while flying BR498 making this aircraft the joint top scoring Spitfire over Ma... [more]
The markings represent a machine of No.118 Squadron Royal Air Force, flown by P/O A.S.C. Lumsden in Ibsley around May 1941. This particular Spitfire was presented to the RAF by the people of the Borough of Lambeth through public subscription.
After the successful conclusion of the Battle of Britain the RAF Fighter Command formed a substantial number of new fighter squadrons to rebuild the losses and enable switching to offensive opeations.
